SUPER CRUISE FAQs

What is Super Cruise? Is it a self‑driving system?

Super Cruise* es una tecnología de asistencia al conductor que posibilita la conducción manos libres en caminos compatibles. On compatible roads, Super Cruise handles the steering, acceleration, and braking, helping maintain a selected following distance from the vehicle ahead.

Super Cruise is not a self-driving or autonomous system. It does not perform all aspects of driving and does not replace the driver. While Super Cruise allows hands-free driving when conditions permit, drivers must remain attentive, keep their eyes on the road, and be ready to take control at any time. Drivers should always use Super Cruise in accordance with local laws and never use handheld devices.

¿Cómo funciona Super Cruise?

La Super Cruise* driver assistance technology uses Global Positioning System (GPS) sensing, GPS-enhanced data, a high-precision map and a network of cameras to maintain control of vehicle steering on compatible roads. El GPS usa correcciones y datos de mapas en tiempo real para determinar la ubicación del vehículo mientras la cámara de detección de carril detecta los carriles marcados en la carretera para ayudar a direccionar el vehículo automáticamente y mantener la posición en el carril. The system works with Adaptive Cruise Control,* which is designed to detect vehicles traveling in the same direction in its path and accelerate or brake the vehicle to maintain a driver-selected following distance from the vehicle ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic conditions. Cuando está activado, Super Cruise usa un sistema de atención del conductor. It monitors the driver's head and eye position and uses alerts in the instrument panel that prompts the driver to pay close attention to the road and steer manually when needed.

How do I activate and use Super Cruise?

On select 26 model year vehicles and newer:

1. While in Park, press the Adaptive Cruise Control* y Super Cruise* buttons on the steering wheel. When you enable the Super Cruise button in a parked state, a white Hands-On Steering Assist* icon will appear.
2. While driving, depending on the compatible road, the driver display will show either a white Hands-Free Super Cruise icon or a white Hands-On Steering Assist icon.
3. Set your desired speed using the Res+/Set- button on the steering wheel:
The system will help you take advantage of the highest level of driver assistance technology available by automatically transitioning from Adaptive Cruise Control to Hands-On Steering Assist to Super Cruise hands-free driving.
• When the Hands-Free Super Cruise icon and the steering wheel light bar are green, Super Cruise is active and you can let go of the steering wheel.
• When the Hands-On Steering Assist icon is green, the feature is active and your hands must remain on the steering wheel.

On select 26 model year vehicles and select 25 model year and older vehicles:

1. In order to use Super Cruise,* turn on Adaptive Cruise Control* (ACC) by pressing the steering wheel-mounted button.
2. When Super Cruise detects that the driver is on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention and all other conditions necessary for the feature to function are successfully met (i.e., lane markings are visible, GPS is available, no system faults are present, etc.) the steering wheel icon in the driver display will be white to indicate that Super Cruise is available. On some models, the vehicle must be centered in the lane before the driver can take this step.
3. When it is safe to do so, the driver should press the steering wheel-mounted Super Cruise button to activate the feature. When the steering wheel light bar and steering wheel icon in the driver display turn green, the driver may remove their hands from the steering wheel.
4. If an Adaptive Cruise Control speed was not previously set, Super Cruise will set the vehicle’s current speed as the cruise speed.

How do I disengage Super Cruise or take back control?

To disengage Super Cruise,* take control of the steering wheel and then press the Super Cruise button again, press the brake or pull the Regen on Demand®* paddle. Turn Adaptive Cruise Control* off. If you grab the steering wheel and press the brake pedal, Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control will disengage.

Does Super Cruise change lanes automatically or follow navigation?

Super Cruise* does not follow navigation door-to-door. However, when a destination is set using Google built‑in,* Google Maps* highlights Super Cruise-compatible roads and shows how much of your drive can be completed hands-free, helping you choose an optimal route. As you drive, Google Maps indicates where hands-free driving is available and alerts you when it's time to take the wheel as you leave a compatible road.
On select, properly equipped vehicles, Super Cruise can also assist with lane changes on compatible roads. Depending on the vehicle, this may include Automatic Lane Change,* where the system can change lanes automatically when it is safe to do so, or Turn Signal Activated Lane Change,* where the vehicle changes lanes after the driver signals. Lane-change features operate only when conditions allow and the feature is enabled.

Where does Super Cruise work and how do I check compatible roads?

Super Cruise* hands-free driver assistance technology only works on compatible roads that have been mapped out by GM. Luckily, more than 600,000 miles of roads are compatible with Super Cruise on select vehicles,1 including both divided and non-divided highways. These roads have been specially mapped by LiDAR to provide Super Cruise the data needed for hands-free driving. Explore the map of Super Cruise enabled roads here to find ones on the way to your next destination.

Does Super Cruise require a subscription, and what does it cost?

The purchase of a new vehicle equipped with Super Cruise* includes three years of connectivity. After this period ends, you must purchase an eligible OnStar Super Cruise plan to continue using the service. Connectivity periods for models equipped with Super Cruise are subject to change. The OnStar Super Cruise plan is $39.99/mes* in the US. Click here to purchase a Super Cruise plan.

Does Super Cruise work at night or in bad weather?

Super Cruise* does work at night.

Do not use Super Cruise in poor weather conditions or when visibility is limited. El conductor debe estar atento al tráfico, al entorno y a las condiciones del camino en todo momento.

Why is Super Cruise not working or unavailable?

Super Cruise* can only be engaged when:
- Adaptive Cruise Control is on
- El vehículo transita por un camino compatible
- Camera or radar sensors are not obstructed or damaged
- Lane markings are clearly visible. Do not use Super Cruise in poor weather conditions or when visibility is limited
- Teen Driver is not active

Para que Super Cruise funcione, deben cumplirse algunas otras condiciones:
- Your vehicle's cameras have to be able to detect lane markings
- Poor weather conditions or dirt and mud can make it hard for the cameras to see lane markings
- Keep the Super Cruise cameras and radars clean if you want to use the feature
- Your Owner's Manual can tell you where they are on your vehicle in the Driving and Operation section under "Advanced Driver Assistance Systems"
- The GPS system must be available
If Super Cruise disengages while you're using it, simply push the Super Cruise button within 10 seconds of disengagement for more information. For select MY26 and newer vehicles, you will need to press and hold the Super Cruise button to view the disengagement message. A message will appear in the Driver Information Center with an explanation, such as, "No Road Information," "Driving in Exit Lane" or "Looking Away from Road for Too Long." You can find descriptions of these messages in your vehicle Owner's Manual.

Which vehicles offer Super Cruise?

Super Cruise* is available on select Bolt, Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado and Silverado EV models.  View OnStar.com/supercruise for which GM vehicles offer Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology.

The Super Cruise system and hardware can only be added at vehicle ordering.

Do I still need to pay attention when using Super Cruise?

Yes — you must always stay attentive while using Super Cruise.* Drivers should be ready to steer or brake at any time.
Super Cruise uses a Driver Attention System camera to monitor head and eye position and help ensure the driver remains focused on the road. The camera's performance may be negatively impacted by sunglasses, seat or wheel position, face masks, sun glare or other conditions. Make sure the camera is clean and has an unobstructed view of your face. If reduced attention is detected, the steering-wheel light bar flashes green to prompt the driver to refocus. If the driver does not respond, the light bar will flash red, a voice prompt will sound, and the vehicle may slow to a stop, activate hazard lights, and contact OnStar Emergency Services.

Super Cruise assists with steering, acceleration, and braking on compatible roads, but it does not replace the driver. It is not available when Teen Driver is active and will not brake for traffic lights or stop signs, detect cross traffic, or steer around objects or construction zones. Super Cruise should not be used in poor or uncertain driving conditions, including bad weather or areas with poor lane markings.

How does Google built-in enhance Super Cruise?

When you input a destination in select vehicles, Google Maps* will display how many minutes of your drive are on Super Cruise*-compatible roads and choose the optimal route for you. When traveling on a Super Cruise-compatible highway using Google Maps, the driver assistance tech will ensure you are in the correct lane to navigate to your routed exit and notify you when you need to take the wheel as you exit.
