Paddle, skate and zip around these scenic freshwater coastlines

Por Kate Silver

Some of the country's most beautiful beaches are actually miles from the ocean, and there are plenty of new and exciting ways to explore them. Built to chase the horizon, your family-friendly Chevrolet Equinox is the perfect vehicle to take you to these scenic freshwater coastlines. And with its available roof rack and cross rails, you can bring along your wake skate, sandboard and skimboard, too.

Flyboard over and into Lake Michigan. Sure, you can spend the day lazing in the sands of 31st Avenue Beach in Chicago. Or you can test out the newest adventure in water sports: Flyboarding. Once a flyboarder is suited up, he or she looks like some kind of dolphin/dove chimera. The suit is propelled by a hose, which sends the explorer soaring into the air and then gracefully diving into the lake. It may be the closest you ever come to having wings—and fins.

Rent paddleboards and tour around the lake at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Glen Arbor, Michigan. The northeast side of Lake Michigan takes on an incredible Caribbean-like blue, bordered by sugary beaches and peaceful dunes. Reflect on it all while rowing yourself on a stand-up paddleboard, a favorite pastime that’s been sweeping the nation. In addition to being a great work out, the paddleboard may take you places you wouldn’t otherwise go, while still enjoying nature’s alluring serenity.

Wake skate in South Lake Tahoe, California. Lake Tahoe is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide and has 72 miles of shoreline. What better way to explore it than on a wake skate? Wake skating combines the best of wakeboarding with the best of skateboarding, giving an extra challenge to those who’ve mastered the wakeboard. There are no footholds on the skate, so as a boat is pulling you, it’s up to you—and your balance—to stay dry.

Zipline over Lake Travis, Volente, Texas. Get a birds-eye view of this beloved lake outside of Austin, Texas, with a ziplining tour through Lake Travis Zipline Adventures. The exhilarating tour includes five different lines to zip down, giving way to a Texas-sized view of the surrounding area. The pinnacle: the longest zipline in Texas soars 2,000 feet across Lake Travis. Following the zipline adventure, families can enjoy a picnic along the shore of the lake, and let that heart rate get back down to normal.

Sandboard and Skimboard at Medano Creek, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mosca, Colorado. This semi-secret Colorado lake appears as the weather warms and the snow melts, filling the area with crisp, clean runoff from the mountains. Surrounded by dunes, the shallow creek is a cherished place for exploring, and is popular for board activities of all sorts. Grab your skimboard (a smaller version of a surfboard) and hit the water, or rent a sandboard from Great Sand Dunes Oasis and slide down the dunes.
