SONOMA, Calif (September 18, 2016) – Simon Pagenaud is the Champion. He had what can only be called a dream
race weekend as he won the pole, led the most laps and won the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway to
claim his fifth win of the season and his first Verizon IndyCar Series championship.
Behind the wheel of the No. 22 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Chevrolet, the popular Frenchman jumped to the lead in Turn One and never looked back as he went on to lead three times for a total of 76 of the 85-lap race on the 2.385-mile road course.
“Thanks to Chevrolet what an amazing race car engine, drivability was phenomenal all day and the aero kit for me has
been perfect all year," said Pagenaud from Victory Lane. "It's unbelievable. I think I will realize more tomorrow. What a
race! So much emotion right now to be honest it's hard to find the words. For an athlete, I think when you can perform
100 percent under pressure like this is amazing. It's such a great feeling. Obviously, it's me winning, but my whole team."
A total of six Team Chevy drivers finished in the top-10 at Sonoma. And eight Chevrolet drivers finished in the top-nine in final point standings.
The 2017 VICS will kickoff March 12, 2017 on the Streets of St. Petersburg.
